Flamenco today (flamenco post 1985)

Camarón de la IslaFlamenco today is in someways, as you will have gathered by now, very different from it's origins in the 15th century and the cante resounds in virtually all major cities in the world. In the last couple of decades there have been a couple of significant movements and influences. One, and arguably the biggest, being the cantaor Camarón de la Isla, some have put it that he's the greatest ever.

JerezHis contribution is partly one of spectrum, his repetoir covers the range of flamenco and through joining with such influences as Paco de Lucia and Tomatito he has brought the worl closer to the strict classic styles to modern doing more to make flamenco accessible than any other and even in death he left inspiration to many to carry on where he left off.

Today you can regularly find flamenco showcasing at major theatres and festivals and is a hot topic for debate and discussion and is now at the forefront of many peoples lives - a far cry from the not so distant past where it was largely ignored.

So what's next for flamenco... well who knows but one thing is for sure, it's evolving. All you need to is go and experience the Jerez style to see that.
