an Introduction to Flamenco

flamencoAs the traditional folklore music of Spain, Flamenco with it’s passion - not just of dance but of music, lyrics and moves - is an integral part of the Spanish culture and in the blood of the people, almost uniquely positioned it incorporates the whole age range Spain from a couple of years old up to the grandparents.

Flamenco can be traced back as an entertaining campfire dance of the Andalucian gypsies of the 16th century. The format of a traditional flamenco is the telling of a story through song and dance, usually detailing the lives of the gypsy people from the carrier of their history, politics to oppression to passionate love affairs.

With over 30 known styles of Flamenco ranging from the cante jondo (deep song) to the more mainstread and familar duende (demon or elf).

Unfortunatly - in some respects - the Flamenco that tourists are often exposed to often differs from the true form, but this should never sto you enjoying the amazing shows, costumes and passions you'll inevitably encounter and hopefully it will have given you a thirst to know more and maybe take up the rhythm yourselves!

By far the best way for experience a Flamenco is to visit one of Spains world famous fiestas. Many include wonderful Flamenco displays of both music and dance. Equally, as nearly all Spanish people participate 100% in the ' ferias', most will be dressed accordingly and a wonderful time will be had by all! ...next page
