About Bachata

Bachata is a style of dance that accompanies the music of the same name. It has its origins in the Dominican Republic.

The dance, a four-step beat step dance, is performed with a walking Cuban hip motion, and a popping of the hip or foot on the 4th count. Bachata can be danced in both closed and open positions very much depending on the setting and mood of the partners. Three main variantions have appeared in recent years each with it's own distinct style. Dominican, being the original, is led preominantly by the hands and, similar to Merengue, dips and turns are done infrequently. Spanish and Italian style have gained significant headway in the past decade, the Italian being more Regaetton influenced and more intimate in it's nature and the Spanish being more techincal and, incorporating more complex styles and being led often by the legs as well as the body.

Being a potentially intimate dance, the the female may also provide communication using her left hand to indicate whether she is comfortable or not dancing in a closed position.
